This week’s GAA Talking Points

Tyrone lads like a full house Maybe it’s a co-incidence but there might be something to the fact that this Tyrone senior team appear to find their mojo when playing in front of packed stands in the Championship. Now unfortunately most of those in attendance against Armagh and Roscommon were there to back the home team (probably a 10 to 1 ratio in both instances) but Malachy O’Rourke’s charges appeared to thrive in the red hot atmosphere provided at both the Athletic Grounds and Dr Hyde Park. It provided a marked contrast to the hushed tones echoing around a near empty Healy Park in recent times. Never throw in the towel

Minister rejects GAA fears over Strule Campus pitches

A ROW over sporting provision at the new Strule Shared Education Campus in Omagh has intensified after Education Minister Paul Givan dismissed concerns from senior Tyrone GAA officials as ‘ill-founded’. The issue centres on the number and layout of pitches planned for the £350 million campus, which is due to open in September 2028 and will bring together six schools on the former Lisanelly Army Barracks site. Senior GAA figures have voiced concerns about what they see as an imbalance between facilities for gaelic games and soccer.

Eddie ‘Minnow’ Fisher: Remembering one of Omagh’s enduring characters

HIS full name was Charles Edmund Fisher, but he was rarely known by it. To his family he was simply Dad, and later Grandad. More generally he was Edmund or Eddie, and to his friends he was affectionately known as Minnow – perhaps because of his stature, perhaps because of his surname, or perhaps due to his lifelong love of fishing. Married to Mary, Eddie went on to have two sons and three daughters: Norrie, Charlie, Catherine, Anita and Brian. In turn he was grandfather to 11 wonderful grandchildren, Niamh, Deirbhle, Sadhbh, Caoimhe, Eamonn, Áine, Eoghan, Somhairle, Rose, Lucien and Etienne.
